I have been a hacker at linux almost since using computers. It really confused me, and luckily enough I managed to get through an IT course completing system administration and deployment of linux. It never really meant as much as it does today. I think its quite silly to compare my outlook in life by an operating system on a computer that does not mean much to majority of people. I suppose alot of you have not even heard what linux is. You would be surprised as to how many servers run linux, about 5 years ago, it was estimated that 70% of all web servers ( the machines that show us webpages ) ran a distribution of linux. With development of programming communties, access to the internet, and better graphical user interfaces aswell as a need for better, faster, more secure and cheaper ways of running computers, Linux is really touching us all, even through our smart phones, like Android.

My comparison: Linux is like an open platform for people to better something they have created together, crossing all boundries, making it better for someone behind them, their children, friends or family. Its code is available for everyone, they give Linux to you for free. Its more secure, reliable and robust. Linux gives us freedom of choice, its open.

Microsoft on the other hand is like the big corporates of today ( well they are the big corporate ) , but I mean banks, telecommunication companies and especially governments.Taxing, putting rules and  regulations in place and milking us to the end of days for their own gain. They close their code, try and be market leaders through underhand gross tactics of bribing, greed and money. They try and lock you into their products through licensing, compatibitly issues and support, not forgetting buying power. You could also compare closed systems to companies such as Monsanto who are literally killing the world by thousands, through their closed genetically modified foods, pesticides and other mass human destruction tools they are devising.

Humans are not stupid, we may have been misguided through other closed systems like religion, culture and through our media, and schooling. Education is the most important weapon for any human, and not  a weapon for leaders to control us.

With Linux taking over smartphones, servers and even desktops, it makes me think how a free opertaing system can be the underdog but through sheer goodness it is organically taking over in some flavour. Its made me think about my life, it challenges me as a person and it gets me excited about technology. Thanks to all the people that make linux work, I just hack at it, use and abuse it. Linux has had a huge impact on my life and how I see the world.

Ubuntu —n. (South African) humanity or fellow feeling; kindness.

Linux was originally developed as a free operating system for Intel x86-based personal computers. It has since been ported to more computer hardware platforms than any other operating system. It is a leading operating system on servers and other big iron systems such as mainframe computers and supercomputers:more than 90% of today’s top 500 supercomputers run some variant of Linux, including the 10 fastest.Linux also runs on embedded systems (devices where the operating system is typically built into the firmware and highly tailored to the system) such as mobile phones, tablet computers, network routers, televisions and video game consoles; the Android system in wide use on mobile devices is built on the Linux kernel.
