HEIDELBERG – Charles Ward (38) was sentenced to an effective eight years in prison on the 14th of March by Mr Pieter du Plessis (magistrate) in the Heidelberg magistrate’s Court for dealing in cannabis (dagga) and two charges for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
His co-accused, Michelle James (28) received a three year prison sentence (suspended for five years) for dealing in cannabis.
The two accused were charged together with Andre Coetzee (who has since passed away) on 25 April last year at a smallholding in Kwikstertjie Street, Boschfontein. They were arrested after a nursery with dagga plants, equipment used in the hydroponic cultivation of dagga, dried dagga and processed dagga was found on the smallholding. The street value of the dagga was more than R1 million.
Ward was sentenced to 10 years (of which two years are suspended for five years) for dealing in dagga and 12 months (suspended for five years) for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm.”
